These ledgers document the monthly earnings of individual prisoners for work performed within the penitentiary or as contract labor. Monthly earnings are figured through the subtraction of days missed from total work days. These contain prisoner name and number, county, and daily work attendance.

Legislation establishing a penal system in Kentucky was passed in 1798, and by 1800, the first prison west of the Allegheny Mountains, the Kentucky State Penitentiary, was completed on a one-acre tract of land in Frankfort.
